A Walk In The City

Be it people, cars, smells or sounds, urban areas are full of stimuli. When out and about in the city with your pup, creating a positive walking relationship is a priority. This in mind, team PuppyGoGo sought insights from our dog walking community to come up with our top Do's and Don'ts when taking your dog for a walk in the city.

Do's...

Do include training when walking. Training your pup when out and about not only helps strengthen your bond but also provides mental stimulation. To create a strong walking relationship teaching your dog how to walk with a loose lead is an excellent starting point. Broadening their skills to incorporate obedience such as stopping and sitting (and not just at intersections) will also make the walk much more enjoyable. Having some treats on hand is a great way to reinforce positive behaviours (our pup Joey is a fan of Love 'Em liver treats!).

Do put safety first. This is important not only to keep your pup out of harm's way but to also protect those around you. Whilst your dog may be friendly, the city environment can be daunting and, at times, unexpected. Safety includes respecting the personal space of others (both human and dogs). You don't know how people or pets will react in the presence of your dog so being mindful is in everyone's interest.

Don'ts...

Don't go unprepared. A strong reliable pet harness (EzyDog has top gear), a spare lead and water are essentials. Don't forget the trusty poo bags! Dogs will be dogs and cleaning up their efforts is part of pet ownership. Common courtesy may sound like common sense however it is the little things that count. There is nothing worse than stepping in an unexpected present in an urban area! Trust us, that small plastic bag will make a big difference… your community will thank you.

Don't use your mobile phone. Your attention should be in the moment. If you are walking whilst looking at your phone you may miss important environmental cues such as people, animals or behavioural changes in your pet. Walking in the city requires your attention so too does your pup!
